What’s Happening To Your AC System After Jan 1. 2020?

The US Environmental Protection Agency began work under the Obama administration to phase out the use of hydrochlorofluorocarbons, or HCFCs. These chemicals are commonly used as refrigerants, and the EPA started this initiative due to concerns about the damage HCFCs cause to the planet’s ozone layer. This level of the atmosphere helps diffuse and prevent radiation from the sun and other sources from reaching the earth. To help promote a healthier environment and safeguard the ozone layer, a ban on HCFCs and a phaseout of their production and importation into the US will take full effect starting January 1st, 2020.

Is My HVAC System Going To Be Affected?

Under the terms of the EPA phaseout, only reclaimed and recycled HCFCs will be able to be used to service HVAC units which rely on HCFCs, which most commonly use R-22 Freon and HCFC-142b. While this is good news for the environment and the planet as a whole, it will also greatly increase the expense of service for older HVAC units utilizing these chemicals moving forward, and units which use them for refrigeration will no longer be commercially available. As the phaseout looms closer, many homeowners are weighing the increased cost of servicing older units versus replacing and upgrading existing systems to new, more efficient, phaseout-compliant systems.
